Tools and Hardware Reviews of Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package OpenerCustomer Review: Great! Should be in everyone's kitchen drawer or toolbox! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my son for Christmas. (I gave to him early though!)
It was one of his favorite gifts!
He loved the way it does so many things with just one tool.
There is even a screwdriver in the handle.
It all works just as advertised. The tool looks great, functions great,
and feels good in your hand. I wouldn't mind getting one for myself!
I can see this also being a very useful thing to keep in everyone's car and kitchen.
Someone did a GREAT job in engineering this one.
I would definitely recommend this for anyone who has to open those
hard plastic packages, or wants one tool that will handle a lot of chores.
Much better to use these than your scissors on any of the bubble-packed items,
like batteries and so many things in the stores. It also opens movies and CD packages.
As a woman, I'd like it to help get a little leverage on opening some of the
packaging things come in these days. This would fill the bill!
I read the other reviews and noted some mentioned the little guard breaking off,
and one mentioned breaking the handles. I can't see how that happened, unless it was
randomly tossed, dropped onto pavement or handled completely roughly. For normal use,
it should last a long time.
All in all, every thumb up! I would definitely buy this again or give it as a gift.
This would make a GREAT gift exchange item for someone you don't know every well.
Everyone has things to open...
Customer Review: The one I received is a little different from the pictures and a lot different from some of the reviews Summary: 4 Stars
There are subtle differences like the screwdriver is separate, stored in the handle, and both phillips and regular. The handles appear to be a bit bulkier than some of the images (that's a good thing for me). There are even differences in the hinge and printing.
The most significant difference is the included safety razor that several reviewers felt skimped on the safety part. With the cutter I received the blade is slid out by first pressing a button and then sliding it outward. It's held back by a fairly strong spring and the minute you release the button the blade snaps back. I can't figure out how it's possible to accidentally cut yourself.
If you're still worried about safety issues related to the safety razor then you can to on purpose what happened to me by accident. After pressing the safety razor button about a dozen times it just popped off. Once that happened the blade slid completely out of the handle. OK, that's a quality issue and earned this four instead of five stars. However, if you don't plan on using the blade anyway then it can work to your advantage.
The blade issue aside, this cutter works well and easily cuts through the most belligerent blister pack. The large handles provide plenty of leverage and the offset blades allow you to cut a product free while your hands stay away from the sharp packaging edges. You have to decide if it's worth $10 for the savings in time and effort. For me it certainly is.
Customer Review: Cheaply made, useless extras, but it works Summary: 4 Stars
I see that there are a significant number of people here who gave this poor reviews because it flat-out didn't work. If the snippers were improperly manufactured, I can totally believe that. And I can totally believe that that would happen. You can't believe how cheaply these are manufactured. The pair I have has weird swirl marks throughout the plastic handles, the darker silicone-like edge has overflow in some places, and doesn't go far enough in others, there were scar marks all over it directly from the (ironically, clamshell) packaging, the blades are clearly very cheap steel, and the extras are so cheap as to be virtually useless.
That said, mine actually performs the function of getting into clamshell packaging very well. The basic design is fairly well thought out. The cutting blades are offset and angled back towards your hand so that your hand is fairly far away from the packaging, there is a very large gap at the base of the blades so that the dross doesn't impede progress, the handle-to-blade length ratio is very high, to provide maximum leverage, and the sprung handle works well to prevent the snippers from getting stuck closed. The only design improvement I can think of would be some sort of guard to push the dross away and prevent it from ever hitting your hand.
Oh, and having it built by trained monkeys instead of the drunken ones they apparently stole from the zoo to make them.
Customer Review: Works fine but nothing special Summary: 4 Stars
A friend suggested that I buy this product to open those annoying clamshell packages, which this product does do. So why did I give it only four stars? Here's why.
First, this product has "gimmicks" that have nothing to do with opening packages. There is a bottle opener at the top and a reversible screw driver at the end of one of the handles, though to reverse the heads I needed a pair of pliers from my toolbox, and once my toolbox was open I had lots of screwdrivers, so this feature is not that useful, not to mention that the screwdriver is very short so it is not easy to apply torque.
There is also has a non-replaceable utility knife blade that I found more difficult to use than the simple and inexpensive utility knives that can be found in any hardware store.
The shears at the top did work just as promised and sliced through some thick clamshells. But I have a heavy duty pair of scissors that will do the same thing, not to mention a real pair of shears that will cut metal wire.
Bottom line: This does work, but you may already own items that will work just as well. I decided to keep this in my office and use it for packages that I receive there. But for home, I already own items that work just fine. So before you rush out and buy this, just check around your house to make sure you really need it.
Customer Review: At last, a GREAT package opener! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not easily impressed with a lot of products, but I know I will be getting a lot of use out of this super-handy opener. After receiving this product, my husband tried opening one of those stubborn plastic packages! My husband has nerve damage in his right arm and hand, but he could use it with no problem! It was effortless to use on those tough packages! It works great! It is well designed! I have some arthritis in my hand and I couldn't wait to try it! I had no problem using it at all! I couldn't be more pleased with this universal package opener!
I agree with the other review, that with Christmas coming soon, now is a great time to buy this item, especially for anyone with arthritis or fibromyalgia, or any other physical handicap that makes opening packages a chore! I won't go into detail, as the other review says it all!
I also can't say enough good things about this universal package opener; I give it my highest recommendation. This is a heavy duty tool designed by women that should serve anyone well for years to come. It took women to make something that makes sense and actually works!
