Tools and Hardware Reviews of Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package Opener

Customer Review: my favorite gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my Open It for 2 years now, and it works just as wonderfully as the day I bought it. I came on amazon today to buy several more to hand out to all of my jealous friends and family members that are in awe of it every time they come over and see it put to use. Out of morbid curiosity, I decided to see what kind of 1 star negative reviews it got and WHY. Seriously people, this thing is not dangerous if you have half a brain! To mistake the little blade at the end for a locking mechanism instead of a sharp pointy blade, you have to be blind or mentally deficient. I'd even trust a 6 year old with it to open a Barbie box, but I won't because I love my pretty orange cutters and use them at every possible opportunity. Don't let the negative reviews deter you from buying this; if you have the sense God gave a billy goat, you'll have no problem utilizing the tool to it's fullest extent safely and easily.

Customer Review: Unwrap in a Quarter of the Time!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite tool. I keep it in a kitchen cabinet for easy access and use it at least 3 times a week. I purchased the Open It right before Christmas, and it made our present opening a much less-stressful time. The powerful blades clip right through cardboard, plastic clam-shells, and those horrible plastic wires used to keep toys in their packages.

It's such a relief to just pop any package open without having to worry about finding the just-right angle to tear or cut. And the little blade at the end of the handle is perfect for opening taped boxes. The only feature I don't use much is the screwdriver, as I don't have many screws small enough for this tiny tool to turn. But if ever I need to fix my sunglasses I will know just where to go. Every household should have this tool--I've given one to all of my relatives' households. I could not recommed this gadget more!

Customer Review: Got kids? You need this on Christmas morning
Summary: 5 Stars

On Christmas Eve, we didn't have it. We struggled to open some gifts for my daughter, and encountered several of the wire twist ties that the toy manufacturers seem to use liberally.

This thing arrived in my stocking on Christmas morning, and the help it provided was like the difference between night and day. Similarly packaged toys opened in a snap, including easy cutting of those twist ties.

The only concern I'd have is that although it's most useful for toys, it's not particularly kid-friendly. The sharp blades and extractable razor mean it should be kept out of reach. Still, it does have a safety lock and the razor stays in its retracted position until moved out with your thumb, so it's not unsafe. You'll just want to make sure you know where it's sitting when there's a toddler around.

Good product, and a great stocking stuffer.

Customer Review: Give me an opener that works...
Summary: 2 Stars

...because this one doesn't. I've had it for about 6 months and never could get it to work very well. The light plastic clamshells it makes decent work of, but try opening the ones with slightly thicker plastic. The first cut into the package might be easy and then it gets difficult. And I had the cutter blades dinged up in no time. From cutting plastic packaging? Yes. Which tells me the metal is soft, cheap quality. Also, note that the clasp that holds the handles closed is too loose and flimsy. Often when you're cutting it jiggles closed and locks the handles together, which is extremely frusterating. Last night my wife made the mistake of cutting some lightweight wire with this tool. Which bent the blades out of alignment now so it won't close. I threw it in the trash without any remorse. The bottom line is that this is a cheaply made piece of junk and it's not a big loss.

Customer Review: Vrey useful indeed
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very well-designed device, and with its extremely sharp blades and comfortable grip, should take enormous hassle and frustration out of opening those thrice-damned sealed clear hard plastic packages so many things come in these days. (It should remove some danger as well, considering how easily one can cut oneself on that plastic while trying to tear one open by brute strength.)

I came very, very close to giving this four stars, because--guess what sort of packaging is used for this device? Yup, that's right... so how do you get it out safely and easily?

Actually, they used less durable plastic than one usually sees, so, since I ordered two, I was able to free one sufficiently to cut out the other effortlessly, and then freed the first the rest of the way. I now look forward to many years of reduced frustration with plastic packaging.
