Tools and Hardware Reviews of Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package OpenerCustomer Review: Very Handy Tool! Summary: 5 Stars
I often joke that by the time Christmas rolls around again, I've finally gotten all of LAST YEAR's kids toys out of their packages! I wish I found this tool earlier. It's HEAVY DUTY! The offset scissors work great to easily cut through any plastic package, regardless of how thick the plastic is. These are heavy duty and aren't likely to break or wear out, unlike so many of the other package opening tools available. Almost all of the others have been knocked for not holding up or can only open the simplest of packages and can't handle the thicker gauge plastic cases, plastic ties, etc. If you have this by your side next Christmas, you won't need anything else, no matter how thick the plastic case is, or the number of plastic ties, tape, etc! It'll save time and frustration. I think your peace of mind is worth the cost of this tool!
Customer Review: MUST HAVE Summary: 5 Stars
For all parents out there, this item is simply a must have. We bought this item in a store the first time thinking we would give it a try. We have one child with two on the way. Anyone that has tried to open a child's toy in the last 5 years knows that the makers of children's toys have decided to make their toys almost impossible to get out of packages. This tool solves all of that. It clips through cardboard and that hard plastic alike. It has a screwdriver on it to get those little battery hatches open. It has a razor for any of your dvd's or to cut through tape. The snips also cut through those annoying twist ties. We have ordered 8 more for the holidays and are going to give them out as gifts. Again, this is simply a must have for any parent that will ever need to open any children's toys in the near future. Absolutely love it!
Customer Review: Cuts OK but be careful about pinching your fingers Summary: 2 Stars
I have tried several package openers.
Utility shears work fairly well, but my fingers often get cut by the sharp edges of the cut plastic.
This Open It! tool does help keep my fingers away from the sharp plastic, however, the handle is poorly designed and has a tendency to pinch your fingers if you do not hold it correctly with you finger tips. Because there is no gap between the handles, if you hold it next to your palm to get a more powerful grip, the skin of your fingers can get caught between the handles. After pinching myself a couple of times, I started wearing gloves when I use this tool.
If the manufacturer removed the screwdriver and utility knife and left a gap between the handles, or designed the handles more like scissors, this would be a much safer tool to use.
Customer Review: Stab yourself while opening packages Summary: 1 Stars
I'm sorry to give the Zibra package opener a bad review since it was brought to market to help people with a task no one wants to do in the first place. However, as a product designer myself, I couldn't believe that this company allowed the final product to be sold and marketed.
I take issue with one feature in particular. The razor blade at the end of the handle. The trigger for using this razor looks just like a handle lock on other handheld tools, so users first using this product have a high likelihood of stabbing themselves with a razor blade right in the palm of their hand. Try it.
It looks like during a design review meeting, the marketing deptartment decieded they wanted to add some "value-added features," too bad it turned out to be a really bad decision.
Be careful!
Customer Review: Not really impressed. Summary: 2 Stars
Hey, it does cut I'll give it that much. However, I don't know for how long. There is already a little vertical play in the scissors action after cutting through a metal wire and it has caused slight indentions in the metal. The non locking razor blade cutter is self retracting which a nice safety feature but locking the handles will not lock the blade so keep away from children. The button to depress the blade is very loose and does not appear well made. I have a feeling that the button will soon just break loose. Also, once the blade gets dull, there is no way to replace it. It also appears that the blade sliding button could lock the handles which for someone not familiar with it, it could slice open a hand. I would recommend getting a set of those EMT type shears instead of spending your money on this.
