Tools and Hardware Reviews of D-Con 00027 Ultra Set Covered Snap Mouse TrapCustomer Review: Silence at Last! Summary: 5 Stars
These traps work! I'm embarrassed to write a review b/c it means I had mice...but you're reading it so.... I researched every trap I could find, and wish I could have believed in the sonic kind, but they results sounded to be 50/50 at best. Ultra Set traps allow you to KNOW you you have been successful, and you never have to touch the deceased. I didn't hear a thing. Silence at last (mice are nocturnal and can disturb your sleep like they did mine)! I saw a single mouse in my kitchen near the garage, and know that there's no such thing as only one. I also know that as quickly as mice multiply, I had to act fast. My problem with bait is you could end up with a dead mouse in your wall, and those smell horrible (never forgot that from decades ago). The cheapest traps may maim, but not kill, and then you are just losing a game. These traps are reusable and easy to set. They are also not likely to miss. The first night out, I got my mouse! I never heard it go off (it was downstairs and I sleep upstairs) which is fine with me, and I didn't have to wonder if it worked. Releasing the successful rodent from the trap was easy, and even the squeamish won't have to look at eyes, or touch the remains. If you decide to, you can simply throw the entire trap away, but that could get expensive (About $5.99 each, even at hardware stores). There are two signs of success: the lever is in the up position and the buttocks/tail are exposed. I used a dab of peanut butter in the cup which I never had to touch (used a knife to apply it).
My first night (after seeing my no-rent-paying-uninvited house guest), before I used the traps (I bought 3), I tried to use mothballs to get them to simply leave. I think I was more bothered than they were. The one I caught was in a trap a couple of inches from several mothballs! So much for their annoyance to that smell. For immediate confirmation of a decrease in your problem, I highly recommend these traps. In the past I've successfully used glue traps, but they make you have to deal with the live animal, as do live traps. for those who want to be humane, these are certainly a quicker end than other methods.
Last suggestions: don't procrastinate. Mice can climb walls and stairs. They are also likely to contaminate through contact, carrying disease, and bodily fluids. On the box, these traps have the Good Housekeeping seal of approval and a money back guarantee. To see mice climbing walls/stairs, check out youtube.
Customer Review: Best. Trap. Ever. Summary: 5 Stars
I had the craptastic D-con circular traps sitting out for YEARS, and they served as little more than the local hangout spot for my mice (and unfortunately recently the occasional NYC rat).
But D-Con redeemed themselves with this trap. I'd originally wanted to buy these to start with, but they were constantly sold out here; not shocking considering how much the average New Yorker is desperate for any solution to keep these rodents held at bay. Finally, after not seeing any rodents for damn near a year, I was overrun after back to back snow and ice storms forced whole families to relocate in my brownstone, and I just got the traps right here on Amazon. And they work. Period. Caught five mice in less than a week, and the traps are designed so you never have to see anything carnage beyond a portion of the tail.
But I'm going to let you in on another secret; rodents can not abide 100% peppermint oil (that's oil, not extract, and it must be 100%). Since they primarily guide themselves olfactorily, the oil is almost poison for them, and I've read it literally burns their nostrils. I bought Peppermint Oil 4 fl.oz, and got to work. It is a very potent oil, and so a couple drops on well placed cotton balls are all you really need. Set them in key entry places, or known high traffic areas for the critters, around your home and it's the perfect repellant. For additional coverage dilute .5 ounces for every two cups of water, and spray where necessary. Smells great, and works like a dream. Since laying it down I've not seen a single rodent, despite our kitchen not being nearly as clean as it should be, and none of the traps have gone off. It had gotten so bad that we could hear those awful high pitched squeals nightly, often in what sounded like blood-combat, now, save once when we heard something trying to come up from the basement apartment, only to promptly turn right back around, nothing.
Customer Review: The "Reusable" Trap You Can't Reuse Summary: 2 Stars
I had a relatively minor problem with the d-CON covered mouse trap as soon as I removed it from the box. The instructions clearly said to lift up the front compartment in order to bait the trap, but one side of said compartment was still firmly fixed to the base of the mouse trap by a strip of excess, uncut plastic. This was easily remedied by cutting across the strip with a pair of scissors, but the fact this was necessary at all did not inspire confidence in the product. I successfully baited and then set the trap without risk of injury to my fingers, and I caught one of the mice in my home within a period of two days. It was immediately apparent that I had caught and killed a mouse because the back end of the deceased rodent extended out of the front of the trap. This made it somewhat difficult to dispose of the mouse, but I accomplished the task while desperately trying to avoid any direct contact with the body.
As the product was said to be reusable (and I wanted to get my money's worth), I again baited and set the same trap and placed it where I had recently seen two other mice. When I later inspected the trap I saw that it had indeed been "sprung," but there was neither a dead mouse nor any bait to be found. I assumed that the trapping device had failed and released on its own; thus transforming a once effecient mouse trap into a feeding dish for the local rodents. I attempted to set the trap a third time, but this time it would not set at all. Yes, the trap successfully and humanely killed the first mouse. Yes, it was fairly easy to set and presented no risk to my person. No, the trap absolutely WAS NOT reusable despite being indicated as such, and I have no intention of ever purchasing another d-CON covered mouse trap at its current price. Had the trap simply functioned three times I would think quite differently of the product, but it failed to achieve even the bare minimum number of uses required for it to be considered "reusable."
Customer Review: Believe Me, It Works! Summary: 5 Stars
I live up in the hills and mice are always an issue here. I have tried so many different products before I found this one. I have tried the regular traps, the mouse bait, the circle traps, the glue board snap traps. None of these worked. I thought I was going to have to either get an exterminator or try the dreaded glue traps. Exterminators can be pricey and as I was researching the glue traps I heard they can be pretty messy and you can actually hear the mouse dying(gross!). So I read the reviews on this product and decided to give it a try before I had to resort to those other measures.
Okay, so I get this trap and follow the advice of someone's review I read on here. I put peanut butter in the cup and just a small dab right at the opening (it's easier if you use a Q-tip to apply the peanut butter). Within an hour I caught my first mouse! Yeah, it was disgusting because the butt and tail were sticking out of the trap, but I got one! I decided to empty the trap and try again. One hour later, another one! You may think you only have 1 mouse in your house like I did, but OMG there is a whole army of them! I have had this product for a week and have caught 5 mice so far! Ewww.
Just some advice: 1. Use peanut butter (it works!). 2. If you are going to reuse the trap, do not try to open the door as the instructions say- for one, your hands get too close to the dead mouse, and for two, it's really hard to open esp when u are totally grossed out like I was. Instead, pull back the lever like you are going to set the trap and give it a few shakes and the mouse falls out. 3. Move the trap around your house and set it against something (like a wall or couch). 4. I found out the mouse stays alive for like 10 seconds and u can hear it struggling to get free (ick!). So if that bothers you set the trap someplace that is still effective, but where u can't hear it!
I hope this helps and good luck!
Customer Review: Must be one of the best mouse trap out there Summary: 5 Stars
Have mice problem in the garage, so order 5 of these "d-Con" traps. In meantime brought from supermarket few packages of "Tomcat Glue Boards" and set of 2 "Smart-Kill" live/disposable trap. Set one package (4) of the glue boards, check on them 3 days later, 2 of the board caught 3 mice. Replaced the 2 with new glue boards and also set 2 in the basement. Check on them 3 days later, one in basement disappeared, one in garage moved and sticked to a plastic bag, can see couple paw prints on the glue board (so obliviously they got away). Left these remain glue boards where they are, and set the 2 "Smart-Kill" and 3 of these "d-Con" in the garage, and 2 "d-Con" in basement. Check them 2 days later, the glue board caught one, live trap - none, but all 5 d-Con each caught one. Redeploy the 5 d-Con, next morning both ones in basement and 2 (of 3) in garage caught the mice (none was caught by the "glue" or "Smart"). So have just redeploy the 4 d-Con in garage and basement again.
Overall, this trap does it job very effectively. Originally when I ordered these, wife asked why do we want to reuse the trap (sanitary reason), but now she asking if we should order more. It is very easy to use, do not really have to look when disposing the dead mouse (hold over trash, press and hold the release lever, then give a few shakes).
UPDATE: This has still been the only traps that catch the mice (not the Glue Boards nor Smart-Kill). Caught the last (?) one ~3 weeks ago . Embarrassed to say that my total count is 24 (so glad this trap is so effective and reusable). Hope that is the end of them, but feel assured with these 5 d-Con still setup and ready in case other sneak in when weather get warmer.
