Tools and Hardware Reviews of D-Con 00027 Ultra Set Covered Snap Mouse TrapCustomer Review: Hopefully the replacement works better! Summary: 1 Stars
Apparently the mice in Philadelphia are a breed of their own, I had actually stayed awake one night to watch their patterns so I'd know where to set up the traps. After reading the raving reviews on this product (along with the Nooski, which I will be reviewing at a later date) I ordered. The trap took no time at all arriving, and I immediately opened it up to bait it and set it (peanut butter seems to be most popular so that's what I used). The trap would NOT set, which I attested the first few tries to "Operator Error". After carefully reading the directions AGAIN I pulled against the lever with a little more muscle than I used before (I didn't want to break it, the frame felt flimsy). It says to place it on a level surface to set it, I ended up having to hold the trap in my left hand and attempted to set it for the final time. The metal wire finally caught the plastic clasp and I placed it near the mice's known nesting area. The next morning I checked the trap which had not been set off. The peanut butter was missing. All in all this trap acted as a fancy dish for the mice which are growing more and more confident that I am feeding them, not trying to irradicate them. I called Amazon and they immediately shipped another over night free of charge (naturally). Hopefully this was just a defective one (it happens). I WILL be reviewing the replacement as well. Hope this helps!
Customer Review: effective and easy Summary: 5 Stars
I agree with the reviewer who wished he/she could deal with using live traps, but as I am one of the more germaphobic folks around and simply cannot handle such a thing, I believe this is the next best thing. The "covered" aspect of the trap is useful not only for its hiding of any gore, but also because it leads the mouse squarely into the trap (I added three customer images that will give you the idea of this) so that it is trapped in a way that breaks its neck, resulting in a quick death, as opposed to regular traps that can potentially trap a mouse by the tail or other body part that leads to its suffering. (*sidenote on suffering: using d-con or other poison pellets not only makes the mouse suffer poisoning, but it can also kill other animals who might find and ingest the poisoned mouse. Bad bad bad.) In this trap I caught three mice in the first 24 hours and, after moving the trap a couple days later, a fourth. I heeded the warnings of other reviewers and have handled the set/release lever gently and have had no problems with it. Also, the mice are trapped so quickly that I have not had to re-bait yet, which is a bonus for me because of the whole germs thing. Releasing the trapped mouse into the trash is easy and not at all as terrifying a task as I would have expected. If I have such problems in the future, I'd easily choose this product again.
Customer Review: 3 mice in less than 24 hours Summary: 5 Stars
My roommates and I have been suffering through a bad mouse problem in our kitchen. We were using regular snap traps and glue traps, but hadn't caught any mice. The mice were consistently able to steal bait without getting stuck/snapped. I decided to find something better, and found many recommendations online for these. With high hopes, I ordered eight of them.
After receiving the new traps, my roommates and I went to work. We used pea-sized pieces of wheat bread with peanut butter as bait. We set them along walls in key locations (e.g. along the side of the fridge, behind the trash cans, next to the stove on the counter). A few hours after they were set, we got our first mouse. The next morning, one more. A few hours later, another. That's three mice in less than 24 hours.
As many have said here the lever can be hard to set. At first it might seem like the mechanism is broken, but be patient! Eventually you will get it to stay down. It is hard to set because the trigger mechanism is designed to be extremely sensitive. I'll gladly spend an extra minute or so to set one of these excellent traps rather than use the ineffective traditional ones. Seriously folks, IT IS worth putting up with the tiny extra annoyance of the lever for the sake of having such a good trap.
Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Not very humane Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased two traps because I have a growing problem with mice. I like the design mainly because of safety around the dogs. My wife had difficulty opening the "door" to put the bait on, so I had to do that for her. The next morning when she got up, she found that one trap had indeed been tripped, but the dead mouse was about 18" away with a small pool of blood under its nose. Obviously, the mouse had taken a hit but managed to wriggle out and get a short distance away before dying. While my wife was distressed about this, she still reset the trap and put it back down. It had a good, clean kill within 30 minutes. Later that evening, the second trap was tripped. My wife got the bags to empty out the mouse into. As she was lifting the lever to let the mouse slide out, she noticed movement, screamed, and dropped the entire trap into the bag. When I came to help, I lifted the trap lever and the mouse jumped out of the bag and took off. We rebaited and reset the trap and placed it back down. Later, my wife heard the trap trip (just a soft "snick" sound), and then heard the mouse crying for what seemed to her a very long time. She finally gave up and went to bed. It was confirmed dead this morning. We have now thrown both traps away, and will continue searching for something that's going to kill the mouse right away.
Customer Review: UNBELIEVABLE TRAP Summary: 5 Stars
I hate the idea that I have no choice than to kill, I tried the humane way for 5 years, but they are overunning my house, since I have chickens and mice are attracked to the feed etc.
I bought several different types and the mice beat the trap and got away with the goods. Not with this trap, I put it under the sink with some cheese I had left over and within ONE HOUR, no joke, I had a mouse, I was a little taken back to see his little legs and tail sticking out but I am sure he could not have suffered since this thing is quick.
I will buy several more tomorrow now I can put them everywhere not being afraid it would hurt my dig or cat, yes I have a lazy cat. I had a terrier that brought me mice on a regualr basis, she is gone now, guess that is why I have a problem.
It is Oct.09 now and I am mouse free, I found their exit from the attic where they were making a home and making lots of noice. I placed the traps in their path under the sink. This trap caught 14 mice in less than 2 weeks. Unfortunately one was not killed and I feel bad about that, but he was not really hurt because he ran off outside. I also found a few in the garage. Funny thing when you scare them away as long as you keep the traps open they will be afraid to come back, I think it is that way.
