Tools and Hardware Reviews of D-Con 00027 Ultra Set Covered Snap Mouse Trap

Customer Review: Effective
Summary: 5 Stars

I tried the regular wooden snap traps and the circular ones without success. The mice in my house are too smart for them. They spring the traps and make off with the bait. I don't know how they do it with the circular traps, but they do it.

As effective as these traps are, I had to be a little crafty with them in order to outsmart the mice. They love strawberry pop tarts. I started by placing some pop tart crumbs at the entrance without setting the trap and the next day they were gone. Again, without setting the trap, I put a few small crumbs in the entrance and a bigger one inside the bait cup. He gobbled them up too.

Thinking I'd finally lulled him into complacency, I baited the trap just like before, but this time I set it. Well, the smart little b*stard somehow made off with the bait without springing the trap. So my next step was to crumble the pop tart crumbs and pack them in the bottom so he would really have to work to get the crumbs out. By this time, he was comfortable enough with the trap that he wasn't afraid to really get inside the cup in an effort to get the bait. That effort was his ultimate undoing. RIP Mickey.

Since then I've caught a half-dozen more using the same method. These things work.

Customer Review: D-Con Built a Better Mousetrap!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had these mice problems on and off and with little help from the landlord I took matters into my own hands and got these traps. The glue traps are disgusting as the little b*stard struggles. I wanted something that would kill them dead. "It's dead, Jim!"

The trap is easy to set but be sure to set the right kind of bait inside the trap. Some people writing one star reviews clearly were not putting in the right bait. If cookies are being eaten in your kitchen, the little b*stard will be looking for more of the same, not peanut butter.

I did the peanut butter (which is what d-Con recommends on the box), let the trap sit for several days and got one. I suggest buying these in bulk. Field mice spread disease, so it's a good idea to kill them.

Other pest killers I've tried (though not necessarily these brands):

Black & Decker EX410-2P-TP1 Ultrasonic Pest Repeller, Medium Room
Tomcat Mice Glue Board, 4 Pk

Customer Review: Finally it worked!
Summary: 3 Stars

I have two things to add that I didn't see in the other reviews.

1. This DID NOT work immediately. For some reason the mouse would just not even look at it. I eventually got it to work when I put some peanut butter on one of the wooden mouse traps. The mouse ate all of the bait on that trap without setting it off, and then he must've been hungry for more. He FINALLY went to get some peanut butter bait from the d-con, and WHAM, dead on site.

2. If the mouse trap snaps, in order to reset it, you must push the pin back in. in the back of the trap where there is a slot, if you look at the very bottom, you will see a metal pin. This pin must be all the way in in order for you to be able to reset the trap. The best way to do it, is to turn the trap over on its side. Or, get some tool to hold it in place.

I'll even add a third thing. DON'T ASSUME THAT YOU ONLY HAVE ONE MOUSE!!! I did, and after catching my "one and only mouse" I was awaken during the middle of the night, and now need to purchase a couple more of these things.

Customer Review: Good news, bad news
Summary: 4 Stars

Here's the good news: These traps work great. Unlike for example the Victor traps I bought once, off of which mice feasted on the bait without ever setting them off, these set easily, snap at just the right moment, usually kill (I don't think any trap kills every single time), and keep the dead mouse out of view until disposal, which is easy and doesn't require touching the mouse.

Here's the bad news: The trigger mechanism is plastic, and doesn't last long. Typically after half a dozen mice -- sometimes more, sometimes less -- a bit breaks off and the trap is useless; you can't set it any more. (Sometimes it's tricky to set one of these traps even if it hasn't broken, until you poke at the mechanism a bit to get it aligned right. But usually they set easily until they break, and then not at all.)

I'm about to buy some more of these traps, because I think they're the best around -- but if anyone ever comes up with a similar trap with an unbreakable trigger, I'll switch to that.

Customer Review: Best trap - PERIOD
Summary: 5 Stars

I am *extremely* squeamish - and would prefer to use a humane trap (no kill) - but really - what am I going to do with a live mouse anyway? I have never really had to deal with this until becoming a homeowner, and having my backyard re-landscaped. I don't know if that drove mice into the house or what - but I had a bunch of mice to deal with, and two small children to think about. I tried a bunch of different traps.. I was traumatized by the glue (I had a baby mouse alive and squeaking, stuck on the glue sheet! Didn't know what to do! Had to leave the house with my kids, and call my husband to deal with it -- not pretty). I tried poison (mouse died under my dishwasher, not at all convenient to remove). This trap -- at least it's a QUICK KILL - with no squeaking mouse stuck in a trap. Also, I LOVE that it is covered - I can't handle the gore. I just see a little tail sticking out - and I don't look inside - I simply eject it straight into my outside garbage - done. Plus, this trap really works.
