Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot 110 Dirt Dog Workshop RobotCustomer Review: Cleans my carpets and floors, inside and outside Summary: 5 Stars
I have 5 kids and a 4000 sq ft house -- lots of laundry and housekeeping! Since I work part time, I was at the point of deciding to hire a maid to come twice a month, but I really didn't want to spend the money. I thought if I could just get something to help me with one of the major tasks, I'd be okay. It'd be better to spend a couple hundred dollars on iRobots, than to pay for someone else to do the floors only every two weeks.
After checking the Amazon reviews, I purchased a refurbished Scooba (mop) and was so happy with its performance that I decided to purchase the Dirt Dog, too. I chose it because it costs less than the other Roomba vacuums and actually seems to do more.
I'm happy to report that I have given Dirt Dog a thorough work out (for about 2 months now) and he has not failed. He cleans my tile, hardwood, carpets, and concrete patio. He goes and goes and goes. I have to pick up socks, cords, and fringed rugs (he's okay with unfringed rugs), and then he will keep going for over an hour and pick up everything in his path.
When I first set Dirt Dog loose, he picked up a lot of dust and bits of stuff that I didn't know was there -- he went under my furniture (which I do move occasionally) and found plenty of dust. I was amazed at what came out from under my son's bed -- YUCK! Now that Dirt Dog runs regularly, there's not as much for him to do, but he works diligently anyway.
Dirt Dog is not quiet, but he's no louder than any other vacuum cleaner (maybe even quieter because he's so close to the ground) and no louder than my kids. I don't mind the sound at all.
I have had to remove the sidebrush and clean the hair that tangled around it, but this is easily done with a screwdriver.
So far, I'm thrilled. I'll update this review if anything changes.
Customer Review: Love it so far Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my hubby to keep his "Man Cave" clean, knowing full well that he would think it ridiculous. I charged it up overnight and set it to work as soon as he left for the day.
We have a very large garage with a lot of stuff in it and the little guy did a great job. I was mainly interested in getting the dog hair, fir needles, and dirt from under the vehicles, quads,& work benches. It did a great job!
I watched it for quite awhile and moved stuff out of its way when necessary, especially cords and plastic bags that would tangle it up. The best thing was watching it go under the tool chest and gobble up several years worth of dirt and dog hair.
Finally I decided to leave him alone and went back in the house. I checked back a couple of times and he was still doing great. The third time I found him sitting there emitting a beep. I turned him off, emptied the really full dirt bin, then turned him back on again. Off he went and finished his job. It took about 45-50 minutes to completely clean the whole garage, and the battery was still going strong.
I did do two things you were not supposed to do, and the little guy handled those well too. It says not to use it for picking up wet stuff. However, there were wet, dirty areas from snow that had dripped off the cars. It slowed the Dog down a little, but he still picked up the sludge. Also, it says not to use on carpet but my husband has a low-pile rug under his Harley and it cleaned that very well.
Granted, I've only used it once but it performed beautifully and I'm very pleased. Even though it says to clean it after 3 uses, I cleaned it thoroughly after the first use because it had so much sludge and dog hair in it. The included cleaning tool is very handy.
Customer Review: Loved it til it died in under 4 mo. Summary: 4 Stars
Great little sweeper. I've had mine for about 3 months now and I use it in my house. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and it picks up the hair just fine - but don't forget to clean the brush rollers. Navigates over my wood, laminate and lino floors with no issue. Gets under the cabinets in the kitchen. Picks up cat litter from the laundry room with no problem (also picks up paper clips and other tiny objects like metal twist ties the cats love to play with that sometimes end up stuck in the rollers).
Hates carpet with fringe. Hangs up on my fancy swirly brass heater vents (and whimpers for help) but gets over the cheap plain ones just fine. Makes it over one 30-yr-old old fashioned door sill plate that is a bit over 1/2 in high and about 4 inches wide. The front wheel gets fur stuck in it that takes tweezers to get out but it does keep going.
When cleaning the small brush roller watch out for one little end that can fall off on occasion. Had to dig through the garbage the first time that happened. Now I keep a finger over it while I pull out lint and hair.
I can do half the house on one charge, so I alternate days on sweeping and that keeps it all under control. I could probably do the whole house on one charge but that would mean I couldn't go off and do something else while the sweeper was doing it's job. Definitely worth the money to me.
May 31, 2010 - Well it died. The brushes have stopped working and iRobotics tech support has been sent an email. I will update as to the quality of their support.Update - Tech Support said I had a dead dirt dog and they sent a new one, all I had to do was swap out the battery and charger and I was good to go. This one appears to be going just fine so far.
Customer Review: One Clean Dog!! Summary: 5 Stars
We were interested in purchasing a Roomba, however, the prices were a bit too steep. We found iRobot's Dirt Dog and its price, features, and more importantly, the overall reviews left by owners made us decide to take a chance. I must say, after numerous uses I am a believer - this thing works...quite well.
I normally do not write reviews, however, this product has impressed me enough that I believe others would benefit from a Dirt Dog. First off, this is a sweeper not a vacuum but don't let that deter you from buying it over a Roomba (unless your home is mostly carpet). This is great on tile, wooden floors and certain carpets. Simply charge it, when you see the green light put on the ground and let it loose. A single charge will enable the Dog to work for nearly an hour. Prior to use I would recommend picking up or putting away items such as clothes, cords/cables, carpet tasels, etc.
The Dog has a set pattern that will ensure that your room/area is clean. If there is an item in the way the Dog will go around it, it hugs walls to pick up dirt near base boards and it will back up and beep whenever it is stuck. While it is called a Workshop Robot, this will work in nearly any room, patio and garage. Even when I think a certain area does not look too dirty I will find some debris in the Dog's compartment. If you have kids or your area/room tends to be dusty I would recommend this product.
Currently, the product is working very well so the question now is long term durability. If anything questionable occurs with the Dirt Dog I will try to update this review so that others are aware of any issues. Again, great product and I've recommend it to friends and family.
Customer Review: not just for workshops! Summary: 5 Stars
I'll admit when I first bought the Dirt Dog I was skeptical, but I figured for a little more than a hundred bucks why not give it a shot? I am so glad that I did! I've read a lot of reviews about the regular roombas and not all of them have been all that great, so when I received my Dirt Dog I spent the first two weeks waiting for it to die, break something, or get stuck in corners for hours. Luckily for me (and the Dirt Dog) this did not happen! I use it in my house - mostly ceramic and linoleum tile, wood floors, and one rug. I have white baseboard running the length of each wall and thus far it has not damaged any of it. In addition it does a surprisingly good job on the rug (definitely not as good as a vacuum but excellent for a quick fix while I have 934849 other things to do. I'm really pleased at how well it has done under beds and around walls as well. The battery lasts a decent amount of time and it does a fantastic job grabbing dog hair (I have two dogs although with the amount of constant fur sometimes it feels like I have an entire pack!) The only slightly irritating part is the brushes which very quickly become clogged with hair and such. However they are somewhat easy to remove and clean as long as you do it after each use instead of the recommended after every 3 uses. Overall if you are looking for something to banish dustbunnies and help with a lot of sand, fur, or dust then I would choose this product over a regular roomba (better price wise anyway) I am not sure how well it would work on anything other than a low pile carpet. Hopefully this appliance will continue to work through the one year mark!
