Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot 110 Dirt Dog Workshop RobotCustomer Review: It's a design flaw & irobot should've known it! Summary: 2 Stars
I've owned this Dirt Dog for just over 6 months and it quit working with 1 beep, which means brushes stall! When I first check I don't see any hair on them, but after a whole day research on everything. I decided to do one more check then I noticed there is tiny short hairs suck on the small "bearing hub", which is mount on the side of irobot. Instead of pay for the shipment for warranty, I picked up my tools to unscrew 10 screws on the bottom of it; that gave me enough room to open the side of gear box cover, which has 5 more screws. Then I finally have access to the gears area and pop out those 2 brushes bearing.
The large one is clean, but the small one was tingle with lots of short hair, which took me 10 extra min to clear that out. The issue is Irobot should known this flaw, but they only put the bearing guards on the large brush and leave the small brush UNPROTECTED by the hair! If you have 2 pets like me and not brush them often, I beg your Dirt Dog small brush will got stalls soon, and if you owned it for over 1 year, you are on your own, most people don't like me to spent 90 min try to find out what caused it but just simply throw it away. So, 2 stars are all I can give! The way you ID this issue is with your fingers to roll back & forth on the main brush, if it roll freely and you see the small brush also moving then you are OK.
By the way, I also have a Discovery 4200 for over 4 years and it's still running without the same issue due to the brushes designed differently, even they don't have any bearing guards, but no hair will get suck on the bearing hub like Dirt Dog!
Customer Review: a disappointment Summary: 2 Stars
I bought a Dirt Dog to clean a large studio area (roughly 2,800 sqft) that is largely open space. I bought the home/dock device too.
Two things emerge: if the device doesn't hit a boundary after an, unspecified period of time it 'guesses' it's stuck and simply stops and beeps. Secondly, I'm disappointed that the Dirt Dog doesn't resume cleaning after recharging its battery. The home/dock is of little actual utility, other than the device returns to recharge itself instead of simply stopping in a discharged state. It's a cute but expensive accessory.
I gather that a new model has modes that enable it to calculate the room size and maximize the coverage-per-room based on information it receives through its sensors. This is said to enable the device to clean larger areas - such as open floor plans & it will apparently clean until the battery is almost depleted then it will return to its base for recharging. There is still no mention of what THEN happens...
All good stuff but it's disappointing that iRobot doesn't provide firmware updates for their products. A simple USB connection to a PC is all that it would take. For all the programmability that they espouse the product is pretty dumb and fixed. Product firmware updates and a facility for customerization are badly needed. I don't want to spend $500 on a new model for things the existing product should already be doing.
Finally, requiring the user to count the beeps is a really bad way for the device to communicate.

Customer Review: Not Just For Workshops Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Dirt Dog for my husband to use in his carpentry shop, but I couldn't resist trying it out in the house, too. I love it! It navigates easily over carpet edges, it picks up crumbs from the kitchen, it slides beneath the bed to clean there and then finds its way back out again, and it gets cat hair out of the carpets as well as or better than my Electrolux vacuum.
When we put it in the workshop, my husband was skeptical of its ability to sweep up fine sawdust, but the Dirt Dog handled the sawdust like a champ. It has a powerful little motor, too: when it got stuck under a heavy wheeled trunk, it actually started pulling the trunk along with it.
On the negative side of using it for the house, it can get tangled in carpet fringe. Also it's bagless, which some people may not like. (Personally, I consider baglessness an advantage because it means I can glance into the bin to make sure it didn't sweep up an earring or something.) It won't eliminate the need for an occasional vacuuming to get the deep-down dirt out of your carpets. And although it's fairly thorough, it's slow. If the floor is dirty and you just remembered that company is arriving in ten minutes, you'll need to reach for the broom instead of the Dirt Dog. The Dirt Dog cleans well, but it takes a LOT longer to sweep a room than you would. But for day-to-day maintenance, it's great to know that the floors are being taken care of while I'm doing something else. This is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
Customer Review: I love my Dirt Dog and I am not afraid to say it! Summary: 5 Stars
Big joke in my house that I wanted a vacuum cleaner for Christmas. Fearing it was a set up, no one would buy it for me- To be clear that would be my husband or brother. As men they have long been versed on what not to buy a woman they love and want to keep happy- the top of that list includes anything cleaning related.
So I bought it myself and it was and is TERRIFIC! We have all tile and hard wood in the house so I really didn't need the Roomba vacuum- and was hoping the sweeper would do the trick. Although the dirt dog is not marketed this way- it is much less expensive than the vacuum so I figured it was worth a try. I read several reviews from other people that had done the same and it seemed to work for them. We have two dogs and are a block from the beach- so our floors are constantly being attacked by sand and dog hair. There are also 3 boys in the house so you can imagine that it takes a lot to keep the floor clean. Not anymore! I run the dirt dog once a day and the floor is perfect. We have a lot less dust under the beds, couches and around the base boards and the floor looks great. It is so easy to use and except for making sure there are no cords in its path there is really nothing I have to do.
It is no louder than a vacuum cleaner and my dogs are not bothered by it. We are looking into buying the pool vac they make because this product works so well.
I would suggest this as a very reasonably priced well made product that does more than it promises to do. Well worth the money!
Customer Review: Great little robot! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for two reasons: My garage and unfinished basement. Due to physics I can't explain... every time I open my garage door every speck of grass, sand, leaves, etc in a 4 mile radius is sucked into my garage in a swirling vortex of doom. I have been sweeping out my garage daily and my push broom just isn't doing my good.
I thought for the price... why not try? I'm glad I did!
First night after I charged 'Dawg' up I set him to work. I heard him bumping along happily in my garage and in an hour, the floor was spotless! I could walk around my garage with white socks and they stayed clean!
He needed a juice boost so I plugged him back in for the night. Next day I sent him to work in the basement. My cat sometimes kicks his wood pellet litter out, and I also have chinchillas and I keep bins of hay downstairs. The pellets and hay were always hard to sweep up... Hay got stuck in the broom, pellets rolled randomly around the floor. The Dirt dog picked everything up.
I am now researching which irobot roomba that I want to get for the rest of the house... I think I'm going to splurge and go with the 610 Pro. I'm excited to have another irobot join the household and might also look at the scooba as well!
The dirt dog is a great way to keep areas swept and neat. I also loan him out to family and friends that need a good sweeping. My parents love it when I bring him over. We have dinner and he cleans up their garage.
