Tools and Hardware Reviews of Touchless Trash Can 13 Gallon Stainless Steel with infrared sensorCustomer Review: Quit working and I can't contact the company Summary: 2 Stars
This is my second Touch Free Trash Can. The first one lasted 5 years and I have no complaints. The lid on the first one finally wore out (the plastic gear broke) but, after 5 years it was to be expected. I ordered another one through this site on Amazon and it arrived quickly, packaged well, and worked fine at first. It was quieter than the first one and the lid opened and closed a little slower, but it worked well. After a couple months, it no longer works at all. It is not the batteries....I replaced the batteries and it still won't work. It does not open or close AT ALL. The User Manual claims free replacement but you have to pay return shipping of defective part and send a check for $9.95 for postage of replacement part. That is not the problem. The problem is contacting the company. The website that is published in the User Manual is not a trusted website. The phone number the User Manual says to call is not operational. I found another phone number and it is answered by an answering machine that says someone will call back, but they don't.
Does anyone have a recommendation? I have never tried to return anything I purchased on Amazon before. Does Amazon have anyone who could help me?
Customer Review: Touch-less trash can Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this item about a year ago. I was absolutely thrilled with the concept and performance of this trashcan until about a month ago. The batteries went bad, so I replaced with new ones. However, the lid has problems. When it does open, it seems to have something that prevents it from opening quietly and smoothly(unlike it had performed previously). Now,it makes a loud clicking noise and kind of gets stuck in mid-motion before opening completely. Periodically, it will not open using the sensor and requires the buttons to be pressed, to open it automatically. There are times when it has to be opened manually. This is a great disappointment a1-because we were so pleased that we were able to look at an attractive design for a trash bin, and that it was hands-free; after experiencing the breakage of numerous cans that had the foot push-pedals; finally, this is the most money I have ever spent on one kitchen trash bin. If I had written this 6 months ago, this would have gotten 5 stars, but disappointingly, it now warrants only 3 stars.
UPDATE: Ordered a replacement lid and it works like new again. However the replacement is about $30. Hopefully, it will last longer than a year.
Customer Review: Works well enough but don't use for kitchen Summary: 3 Stars
I've had no problem with the automatic lid until we started to use it for the kitchen.
1) lid is very light as you might imagine since this is battery operated
2) with kitchen trash, lid can easily malfunction due to the high moisture content. taking the batteries out and drying the unit will help but that kind of defeats the purpose of something like this
3) unit is _NOT_ waterproof. so if your trash has a lot of liquid that seeps out through the trash bag, it will seep onto your floor.
4) lid is difficult to clean.
5) lid does get confused when it's being used heavily. e.g. a party where many people are throwing stuff away
6) when turning the unit on after turning it off, make sure nothing's in the way as it calibrates itself. otherwise lid will open and close incessantly with little rhyme or reason.
7) comes with an inner plastic ring that holds the bag in place. this ring is a bit flimsy and ours broke as I was taking it out one day - I guess I must have twisted or something.
But it does do what it says - touch free operation for the most part.
Customer Review: Great Touchless Trashcan - stick with the original Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Original Touchless Stainless Steel Trashcan (13 gallon), and it was wonderful. The touchless feature is great, and the plastic ring that holds the bag in place worked fabulously. The shape and finish were also nice.
So, when I decided I needed a smaller one for recyclables (13 gallons is too heavy for lots of glass and paper), I wanted another iTouchless, and decided on the "newer" version, and purchased the 8 gallon NX version.iTouchless Fully Automatic Stainless Steel Touchless Trashcan NX, 11 Gallon (42 Liter)
However, the newer version is not as nice. The sensor may be better, but the circular base takes up quite a bit more space, and the wire ring used to hold the bag in place doesn't work nearly as well.
So, if you are going to get a touchless trash can, go with the original one. You can tell the difference because the original has more of a rectangular footprint.
Customer Review: 2 years later and still going strong! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this trash can over 2 years ago and it is still working flawlessly -- and I don't even recall ever changing the batteries yet. (Though maybe with busier households you'd get shorter battery life.) I use mine as a garbage can in the kitchen and I love it. I approach with wrappings from raw meat and the cover flips open on its own so I don't have to worry about touching the lid with my bacteria contaminated hands. (I need a kitchen faucet that works the same way!) And, naturally, it's great when your hands are full. It is also excellent at keeping in unpleasant odors -- at least until the cover flips open and then you realize it's probably time to change the bag. ;-) Ours is near a high-traffic area in the kitchen but is tucked back enough so it doesn't over-react to passing bodies. Not only do I have no complaints with this item, I can't imagine working around a kitchen without it!
Update: April 2010. It's four years now and it's still performing flawlessly.
