Tools and Hardware Reviews of iTouchless Fully Automatic Stainless Steel Touchless Trashcan SX, 13 Gallon (52 Liter)Customer Review: Just So-so Summary: 3 Stars
Just received this item (07-06-07) and I have owned the iTouchless 13 gallon trash can with the pivoting lid but it broke and I didn't replace it. These are my initial impressions of the new sliding door model.
1. My 13 gallon bags (Smart & Final Tall Kitchen Bags w/drawstring, 24 x 27-3/8 inches) don't fit because the trash can is too deep by about an inch or inch and a half. I'll have to find something about an inch or more thick to put on the bottom of the can so that my bags will reach high enough to use the bag retainer ring. Maybe other brand bags will fit properly?
2. The sliding lid looks like it will accumulate more dust than the pivoting lid. It will be harder to clean too.
3. The sliding lid mechanism has a noisy geared mechanism. The pivoting lid was much, much quieter. I'll have to see if I can get used to the noise.
4. The sliding lid opening looks like it is either larger or a more convenient shape than the pivoting lid was.
The user manual says 4 D-cells will last "up to" 10,000 uses. They don't say if an opening cycle followed by a closing cycle is 1 use or 2 uses.
Update 07-12-07.
1. None of the name brand 13 gallon bags are taller than the Smart & Final bags I am using. Eighteen gallon trash compactor bags will fit, but cost more. So much for their, "Fits any 13 or 18 gallon trash bags," statement. I'm sure a styrofoam spacer can be put on the bottom of the can so I can use my 13 gallon bags.
2. The sliding lid has malfunctioned a couple of times. I pressed the manual open button and the lid only opened partially. After opening and closing the lid a few times it appears to be a temporary problem.
3. When China can't make a reliable trash can, why is Boeing now buying aircraft parts from them?
Update 07-31-07:
1. It turns out that I can get used to the gear noise.
2. The sliding door opens too slowly. The pivoting lid model opened much more quickly. If iToucheless doubled the speed it would be about right.
3. There have been no more malfunctions.
4. Adding a spacer to the inside of bottom of the can makes 13 gallon bags fit properly.
Customer Review: Very flawed implementation Summary: 1 Stars
I just purchased this can as a replacement for the previous generation with the lid that flips up. It is a serious, and borderline unusable, step backwards for iTouchless. My family was extremely pleased with the last can. It needed to be replaced when the lid was dropped and cracked. While it was imperfect, it had served us well for a bit over a year.
The new can is not worth the money even with the current $20 promotion. The reviewers who mentioned the plastic teeth in the retaining rim are correct. While the bags have not torn for me, this is solely a testament to the fact that I slid my hand into the can to keep the snags from tearing the bag. Clearly this is absurd for a "touchless" trash can.
The opening mechanism is weak and slow. I have had the can for three days and it has stopped working a half dozen times (on brand new batteries). I had to move it with my hand to loosen it at which time it would work again for a few more openings.
The reviews that mention that standard bags are too small for the can are also accurate. Ironically, despite this, it is difficult to pull the full bag from the can.
Overall this purchase was a complete misfire. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere for a trashcan. If the touchless feature interestes you, get the previous version with the flip lid. In the end this model is in no real way touchless.

Since on occasion viewpoints will change after time has passed I thought I'd update this review. After trying to live with this for several months it is now itself in the trash. Between the near impossibility of removing a bag intact and the unreliability of the opening mechanism we couldn't take it any more. It is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. It is a stunningly poor product. Amazon should stop carrying item and the manufacturer should discontinue it immediately.
Customer Review: First one came broken, replacement came broken Summary: 1 Stars
What a waste of time and energy. I had to give it one star in order to write this review...but that is way over-rating this pathetic little piece of metal. My first order came shipped via UPS in its own damaged retail box. There was no outer packaging. Upon taking it out of the box I realized it was really wobbly - like the table at the restaurant with an uneven leg - and then, we tried to put the lid on and make it work-which was a joke. The lid consists of 4 slats that slide back and forth. Ours unfortunately only came with 3 of the 4 slats and they were disconnected from one another. Basically it was broken. SO, I filled out the online request form to have another one shipped to me. What a surprise when it arrived well packaged with an exterior carboard box (unlike the first one). I thought we had a winner. Then, I realized there were 6 layers of tape on the box - it had clearly been opened and returned over and over again. We still tried to make it work. I couldn't believe it...This lid was broken too! All the slats were separated from each other so it wouldn't pull open or closed...and the sensor didn't work. One of the slats was jammed up in the inside of the lid and wouldn't come out by using the open or close button. The 4th slat was found inside the trashcan. Anywway, I have had to re-wrap and package both of these monsters and haul them to the post office to return them. What an annoyance. Total novelty item that was a huge waste of my time and money.
Customer Review: Great trash can! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this for a unique reason: my husband was sick of our pedal trash can lid hitting the wall and marking up the paint. We have an older house, so there isn't a great spot for a trash can. So, I ordered this so he'd stop griping about the lid hitting the wall and him having to repaint the wall every 3 months.
I was concerned b/c of all the "Negative Nancy" reviews I've read. Here are my rebuttals:
1. If there was a problem with the trash can tearing the bag, they've fixed it.
2. Our trash bags are a little small for it, but there's a great ring that hold them into place. Trash bags are generic, they are going to be a little big or small. I didn't expect a custom fit for a trash bag, so it doesn't bother me.
3. Yes, it makes a noise when you open it. My dog and toddler are fasicinated by the noise, which is funny to me. If it bothers you for the 2 seconds opening and closing it, you've got other issues.
It works great, only had it a week so I don't know about the battery life. But, if it becomes an issue, maybe I'll get rechargable "D" batteries. I don't have the ability to use the charger b/c I don't have an outlet close, so I can't comment on it.
Hope this helps.
Customer Review: Poor Packaging /Great Product Summary: 4 Stars
After many years of searching for the "perfect" one, I love using this trashcan. The noise doesn't bother me, the 13 gal. Glad Forceflex bags I like to use work fine, even though they are a little short for it. (The ring still holds them in place.) The on/off switch and manual buttons are very easy to use, when needed. It holds A LOT - but overstuffing will make it hard to empty (like any trashcan.)
CONS: Be prepared to spend time getting it ready to use. It is a real pain, but the huge sticker right on the front can be removed, by patient scraping with a rubber scraper, followed by a scrubbing with "Bartender's Friend". Even worse, the "slats" on the top of mine were not attached to each other at all. So, the sliding mechanism worked fine, but the hole remained open! It wasn't too difficult to figure out that I needed to carefully slide each one under the next, until the tiny bumps "caught." There were no directions about needing to do this, however, and it was obviously due to shifting during handling.
Overall, I'm very happy with the product, and would definitely buy it again - plus will probably invest in the AC adaptor.
