Tools and Hardware Reviews of simplehuman Butterfly Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Proof Brushed Stainless Steel, 38 Liters /10 GallonsCustomer Review: Ultra modern! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this trash can to replace my old and broken stainless steel trash can, which was 10 years old. It too had a butterfly opening, and you step on the foot lever to open the doors. First of all, I've always liked the butterfly opening, it's wide enough so that trash does not touch or brush the opening and nothing gets dirty. Also, the butterfly opening means you have 2 shorter lids that do not require a lot of clearance above it to open to the fullest extent. This makes it very nice for small kitchens. However, after 10 years, my old trash can was quite worn out. I was thrilled to see that I could get a very similar trash can, with the same butterfly opening and in stainless steel too! The price was a bit steep ($170 for a trash can-yikes!) but I think it was worth every penny. I love the new updated version even more!
Pro's-same great butterfly opening, fingerprint proof stainless steel (pretty/looks clean), very quiet and smooth opening and closing mechanism (improvement from my old can which could make some noise if I stepped too hard), seems very well made, perfect size for pushing it flush against the pantry wall and it doesn't obstruct area around it, 10yr warranty with the manufacturer.
Con's-price is steep but if this lasts more than 10yrs, it will pay for itself in the long run.
I am really happy with it. My family was laughing at me when I got it, but now they are all impressed! Add in Amazon's free shipping (to HAWAII no less) and I figure I made out like a bandit.
Seriously, this is a good investment for the long term.
Customer Review: Nice Can, But Scratches Floor Summary: 3 Stars
I'm surprised this can is getting only top reviews. It is a good trashcan, but in my opinion there is one fatal flaw. We put this can in our kitchen, on our newly finished wood floors (just moved into the house). There had never been anything on the floor before this can. After a few weeks of use, we noticed a long (about 4") scratch on the floor beneath the foot pedal. I turned the can over, and discovered that, amazingly, the underside of the foot pedal has the heads of three large screws sticking out, facing down towards the floor. So every time we stepped on the pedal, or the can shifted a bit, or my husband moved the can while switching out the bag, we were scraping phillips-head screw heads along our oak floor. Unbelievable! I covered the screw heads with masking tape, but I began to get nervous thinking the tape would wear through. So I put a round felt furniture pad on each screw head and it seems we have not added to the floor scratching. So I guess that's the solution: when you unpack your new trash can, be sure to turn it over and install felt furniture pads on the underside of the foot pedal before you use it. Small price to pay for a nearly $200 trash can that looks pretty, you say? Perhaps. But if you'll excuse me, now I have to go call our floor crew to see if they can come back and repair our "trashed" wood floor.
Customer Review: The best thing ever Summary: 5 Stars
Seriously, this item should be listed as one of the best things on earth. Or at least get a design award.
I have looked at expensive trash cans for years, and have thought they were silly and couldn't imagine spending that on a "trash can"!. However, I have probably spent the same amount on crappy trashcans over the years, only to have them fail.
We have very crafty dogs - first they learned to tip over the trash can, then we put a brick in it, which helped a little - but then they learned to get that too - and for the past 6 months or so, we've had the trash can outside on the back porch - desperately annoying when you have one thing to throw out, especially this winter when it's been so cold. So then we brought the can back in, but put an eye hook to hold it to the wall, but then they figured out how to pull out and shred the bag.
So - I read several reviews which convinced me to buy this one - and we are so happy - sounds dumb to be happy about a trash can - but it's the little things in life. The dogs have been completely stymied by it, the bag doesn't even show - it looks great, and takes regular old tall kitchen can bags, and changing the bags is snap - no wrestling to get an overfull bag out. I am totally happy with this product.
Customer Review: The can is great, but its an odd size to find bags for Summary: 3 Stars
I agree that these cans are beautiful, well made, and they operate flawlessly exactly like the other reviewers state.
The issue I have is that standard kitchen trash bags are 13 gallons big. Using a 13 gallon bag in this 10 gallon can is difficult. The bags are about a foot too big around the rim circumference which leaves a great amount of sloppy excess bag to stuff into the little hole in the bin near the top for that purpose.
Ten gallon waste basket bags are too small for this 10 gallon can, they don't quite reach the bottom of the can. The "Simple Human" 10 gallon bags are costly, about 50 cents each bag with shipping. Maybe that's not too costly for a family that can afford to pay about $190 for a kitchen trash receptacle, but to me the cost of the bags is outrageous. Also, the recommended "Simply Human" bags, type "H", included as a simple with the can, fit too well. They are extremely tight around the rim, very difficult to get on or off.
It wasn't obvious to me in the Costco on-line site that this can wasn't a standard size. Even though we paid about 1/4 of the Amazon price for the cans, I'm sorry we bought them. I'd gladly trade them for any decent standard size 13 gallon kitchen step can.
Customer Review: Still going strong after 5+ years! Summary: 5 Stars
I couldn't believe I was going to spend upwards of $150 on a garbage can--but once I get my mind set on something, it's set (though I did have to convince hubby). And needless to say this thing is THE BOMB. It kept our cats out, our small dog out, visiting large dogs out...and years later, our toddler out! I love everything about this can...from the foot pedal to the quiet closing lid to the ability to use regular garbage bags. And to be honest, I didn't even know there was a latch that could keep it open (until reading these reviews!)--I'll have to search that out! That just makes it even better!
The only problem is that somewhere along the way, we must have spilled something [acidic?] on it so it has spots/stains that cannot be removed (and we've tried everything). I really wish I knew what was spilled so I could warn you all, but unfortunately I have no idea. That said, I still give this thing five stars because it's so cool...and because it's the only garbage can we've had that has lasted this long. And we're actually looking at investing in another one (which is why I was visiting Amazon today and decided to write a review).
I HIGHLY recommend this garbage can.
