I've owned this trash can for three years and it still looks & operates perfectly. The slim design works great at the end of my kitchen island. I can step on the pedal and swish the garbage right off the counter in to the can. The lid mechanism is an engineer's dream; it operates quietly, opens quickly & closes slowly. The lid keeps most smells inside when the lid is shut.
I use standard 13 gallon tall kitchen bags. A trick to keep the bag neat in the can: Go to an office supply store or Amazon and buy those big red rubber bands (7"). Then just put that around the top of the bag, folding over the excess. It keeps the black plastic liner clean and the bag neat and secure.
I just wipe down the brushed stainless exterior with a damp dishtowel and have had no staining/marking problems.
Yes, this can is expensive but it's worth it. It's beautiful and functional. I expect I'll still be using this can 10 years from now!

I can't tell you how many times I forgot to remove the kitchen trash only to find my Boston Terrier dumpster diving and scattering the trash for that moment of forgetfulness. I have a small kitchen, so I have no room to hide a trash can in a cabinet. This trash can is the BOMB! The dog can't figure out how to keep his paw on the foot lever before the top shuts again! He can't knock it over and I don't have to remove the trash every time I walk out the door! I know it sounds crazy, but to come home and see a clean orderly kitchen with a trash can UNMOLESTED is a great feeling! One hundred and sixty two dollars seems a lot for a trash can, but I am more than happy I bought this amazing contraption! It looks good, it's easy to use and has solved my problem with Duke, the dumpster diver. I love that trash can! If you have this problem, buy this can. We have had this trash can in regular stainless steel for almost 7 years, and it is still holding up as strong as the first day we got it! I have to say, when my husband wanted to pay this amount for a trash can (because it was the same $ when we bought it), I was totally against it. But I gave in because the design went well with our brand new kitchen. I don't regret it at all now! With two small kids, 2 dogs, and 4 cats, this can has seen a TON of garbage. We even moved a few times, and it resisted the banging and rough handling of the movers without a scratch! The inner can makes it easy to take out and change the bag. We use the kitchen sized drawstring bags, and they work perfectly. The only reason I would consider buying a new one now is because it is so extremely dirty and I am too lazy to give it a good cleaning. A trash can ought not to draw attention to itself. The rectangular shape makes it convenient to unobtrusively store along side a kitchen cabinet, the butterfly lid keeps odors from escaping, and the dampening mechanism that operates the lid makes the can completely silent. So, this trash can performs its little unappreciated task as well as anyone could expect.
Despite the advertised size of ten gallons, standard "tall" (13 gallon) kitchen trash bags fit perfectly - I have no explanation for reviewers that complain about an unusual size requirement. It's wide enough to easily accept scraps from a cutting board.
The fingerprint-resistant surfaces clean easily and the interior plastic bucket is easily removable for cleaning. Mine is over a year old and I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

My husband and I saw this at a friends house, and loved the butterfly opening. We finally found the trashcan at Target and were somewhat surprised at the cost, but decided to buy anyway. A year later, we still love it. It is very easy to use, and the inner tray makes removing the trash very easy and mess free. The lid always closes (unlike the flip up lids that remain stuck open on other models). Great odor control and ease of use. I suggest using the Simple Human trash liner bags "H" as they fit perfectly. These can be ordered from the company or purchased at stores such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens-n-Things, etc.
The stainless steel is easy to clean and complements the kitchen nicely. A great improvement over the plastic trash cans of the past!
