I never really liked trashcans with a step pedal before I discovered simplehuman. They never seemed to work right, either jerking up the lid or not opening it at all. With simplehuman, the lid opens smoothly each and every time. The amount of pressure I apply with my foot correlates how wide it opens, which is fantastic if I'm worried about odor escaping when I only have something small to toss away or if I have something larger to throw away.
It's amazing how well it keeps odors contained inside the can and not escaping into the living area. I always had an open trashcan under the kitchen sink growing up and I carried that habit into adulthood. Garbage (especially crumpled paper and potato peelings) would end up in the cabinet. Also, if it wasn't taken out soon it would stink up the entire apartment so I would sometimes throw away bags not even half full. Also, hands messy from cooking, the cabinet door would get dirty where I would open it in order to throw something away.
The simplehuman trash can simplifies my life. My cabinet stays nice. Odors are contained inside the trashcan and with simplehuman Odorsorb Trash Can Odor Filters, 2-Pack I don't even have to worry about odor when I lift the lid to throw something away.
As noted in other reviews, fingerprints show up dark on the stainless steel body. However, they wipe away easily with a microfiber cloth or a sponge.
I use the simplehuman liners because they fit perfectly and keep the trash can clean. (Mine came with three sample liner bags which sold me for future purchases.) With my old generic trash can the bags would always fall down and I'd have to clean out the can. Even though this trash can is expensive, it is worth the money for the convenience.
The design is also nice because the rounded part is good feng shui while having the flat side allows the can to take up less room than a round version and fit nicely against a wall or cabinet.
