Customer Review: After just over a year of use...I say buy something else

We've been using this trash can since January 2010. Relatives of mine have a nice, large stainless steel simplehuman trash can that is amazing...but we couldn't swing the price of that so opted for the plastic can. Given that this can cost at least twice as much as a plastic lidded can I could find at any given store, and was the same brand as my relatives' awesome can, I figured it would be nice like theirs even though it wasn't stainless steel.
At this point after not even 18 months, I can say I hate this trash can. The pedal to open it doesn't really work anymore. When you step on it it makes the can wobble back and forth. When it does respond to lift the lid I have to use delicate pressure so the whole thing won't tip over. Even doing that, the lid opens *so* slow that it's not worth the wait. I've resorted to just using my hand to lift the lid...which defeats the whole purpose.
I never needed the lid lock - but it's just a metal clasp that slides over to hold the top & bottom together.
For the record, we are a family of 4. The thing hasn't been abused, but it's our "main" trash can so perhaps it got more use than the average can would. Still...given what we paid and its performance today, if I could do it again I would just buy a Rubbermaid trash can, or something similar, for significantly cheaper.

(I did not purchase this from Amazon, but from another retailer, but this is the only place I could find to easily write a review.)
My boyfriend and I own a 4-year old, 15-lb. male Maine Coon mix cat who has been very sweet, but completely obsessed with getting into the garbage from day one. He has knocked over garbage bins, opened slide-door closets and cupboard doors to get to the trash can, and has made countless messes (both with trash and his vomit from eating said trash). Until now, I was unable to find a sturdy locking trash bin and since we are soon moving into a new place, I briefly considered the option of giving up the cat.
The Simplehuman plastic step can saved the day. I have been using it for a few days now and the cat has not yet found a way to get at the trash inside (nor has he been able to knock over the can). It would take me a large amount of force to break the lock on the can (I'm actually not even certain I would be able to), so I think this would be good for use in homes with large dogs. The cat literally looked at the garbage can this morning and cried pathetically. I think he may have been admitting defeat.

This is a nice trash can, but it does have just one shortcoming: it doesn't have a liner can, it is just the outside shell shown in the picture. It takes tall kitchen bags well, though the last corner is a bit tight to slip over the lip, but basically works well; I just prefer to have a removable liner to keep the can nicer and cleaner, and the metal simplehuman cans do have them.
Otherwise, I am happy with the can. The lock works well to keep out my very determined dog who likes to knock the can over and get into the trash. He destroyed our old simplehuman metal can, but this one seems to be holding up really well; when he knocks it over it is undamaged, and the lock works perfectly and keeps the trash safely locked away.
The lid mechanisms all are working well after several months of constant use, so overall I am very happy with the can. It is good value for the price especially, since it is less than half the cost of their metal cans and is holding up better against my wild dog!

This garbage can is exactly what I needed! It's black, step opening, slow closing, and my favorite feature? THE LOCK! I have a 1 year old son that loves to dig in the trash and likes to throw things (important things!) of ours away. We call him out "garbage pail kid" lol!
I noticed some other reviews said that when you step on the step opening it jerks open and loses balance and hits the wall or falls. Well, how the heck are you stepping on it? You only need to GENTLY put your foot on the step and it will open partially or slowly. It does need to be a few inches away from a wall for the hinge to move.
Anyway, I am very satisfied. Oh, and plus it fits my Costco trash liners, so i don't have to buy the special simple human liners.
Ps. I bought mine at another store, so it's actually a 13 gallon trash can. I noted some people didn't like the size of the 10 1/2 gallon can--I wouldn't either!

Bought this can based on user reviews, price. found the following:
1] Lid lock is only partially functional. It came from the factory stuck. I had to take the lock assembly apart to get it to work. worked for a few days, but ill fitting plastic parts caused it to jam again. makes no difference, my cat doesn't give a damn about the garbage.
2] foot pedal plastic attachment to lid lifting mechanism is poorly designed, manufactured, and assembled. If I use more pressure than the slightest touch, the foot pedal dislocates from the joint and the lid will not lift. Instead, it sends the entire can shooting forward into my shin/knee, sometimes falling over and spilling garbage. I am working on an improvised solution. regarding the design, there is no retention in the pivot point, causing the issue described.
3] it holds trash, as advertised. wooo wooo.
